How are British boarding schools’ exam results?
While summertime is generally quiet, with pupils and teachers enjoying their well-deserved holidays, it is crunch time for all those who sat their IB diploma, A Level, Scottish Highers and GCSE papers before the end of term. So, how are British boarding schools’ exam results this year?
IB results are the first to be released in July, and we received good news of student success from several of the schools that offer this qualification.
Brentwood School celebrated a record set of results, with its average of 38.2 points comparing very favourably with the worldwide average of 30. 12 of its 30 Diploma students scored 40 points or more, with two securing the maximum total of 45.
The average score of IB students at Haileybury School was 38 points this year, similar to last year’s record-breaking results. Two pupils received the maximum score of 45, placing them in the top 1% globally, with a further two scoring 44 and over 30% of the cohort scoring 40 points or more.
Students at St Clare’s Oxford continued the school’s record of bettering the world average with their overall points score of 35, with 83% of students scoring above this. Three achieved 43 points or over, equivalent to A*A*A* at A Level, and 13 students scored 6/7 points in all six of the subjects they studied, which is the equivalent of A*/A.
Meanwhile in Scotland, some students sit the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Higher and Advanced Higher exams. One such example is Strathallan School, where students celebrated 100% A-B grades in Chemistry, German, Latin, and Spanish Highers, and the best Advanced Higher results to date, with the highest ever pass rate in school history. 97% of those who chose to study Highers/Advanced Highers at Strathallan achieved their first or second-choice university destination including the Universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St Andrews and Stirling, Exeter, Newcastle, Oxford Brookes, and North Carolina in the US.
A Level results were released on 15th August, producing more good news from our British boarding schools. Set against a national average of 28% of grades achieved being A*-A, 41% of Leighton Park School’s A Level students scored this highly, 57% of Fyling Hall School’s students and 60% of Christ College Brecon’s students. These impressive results have helped students achieve places on coveted degree programmes at world-leading universities in the UK and overseas, so it’s exciting times for them all.
GCSE results are still to come, helping to decide where 16-year-olds get to finish their schooling. If you’d like to know more about British boarding schools’ exam results or help choosing where your child could achieve their best results, please get in touch.
