A subject that sits between, and bridges, Art and Science, many British boarding schools offer Design & Technology (DT). Here are just a few examples.

Most often represented by its famous provision of outdoor learning, Gordonstoun has a wonderfully broad curriculum that also comprises a range of activities and projects which complement classroom-based learning, one of which is cookery. A group of keen bread bakers regularly meet in the Gordonstoun kitchen to mix and prove their dough before breakfast, creating home baked focaccia and pitta for the all-school lunchtime sandwich bar.

The DofE, as it is more often known, is a scheme of awards for young people aged 14 to 24, which recognises their achievements in the fields of Volunteering, Physical Activity, Skills and in completing a Team Expedition. Most British boarding schools support students to complete the award, whether at Bronze, Silver or Gold level, due to its universal recognition as proof of an individual’s commitment, resilience and teamwork.

We are all keenly aware how tough the pandemic period has been for children. Disruption to their education has impacted them both academically and in terms of their personal growth.

Recognising the effects of this upheaval, Christ College Brecon has adapted its weekly timetable to include more extra-curricular activity to help with pupils’ physical, spiritual, social and moral development.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an extra-curricular activity in which more than 400,000 people from schools, universities and beyond participate each year. Lots of the schools we recommend have delegations that get involved, both within school and at conferences further afield.

Something that sets our British boarding schools apart is their commitment to providing an all-round education. While academic ambition, commitment and achievement are important, they are not the be all and end all, so the schools we recommend offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
