Which British boarding schools are best for cookery?

Most often represented by its famous provision of outdoor learning, Gordonstoun has a wonderfully broad curriculum that also comprises a range of activities and projects which complement classroom-based learning, one of which is cookery. A group of keen bread bakers regularly meet in the Gordonstoun kitchen to mix and prove their dough before breakfast, creating home baked focaccia and pitta for the all-school lunchtime sandwich bar. On Saturdays, they support the student enterprise baristas with doughnuts to sell alongside cappuccinos and macchiatos. Beyond baking, cooking is used as part of the international element of the curriculum in both the Senior and Prep Schools, giving young people from over forty nationalities a chance to introduce food from home to the kitchen and to each other. The senior students can also enjoy a Leiths Academy cookery course run by the school’s award-winning Head of Catering and Head Chef, and overseen by visiting Leiths assessors. Gordonstoun is the only school in Scotland to offer this remarkable opportunity to develop life enhancing confidence and skills in the kitchen whilst achieving a highly respected national qualification.

At Mayfield School, Food and Nutrition is a key part of its broad curriculum, with weekly lessons for all girls in Years 7 to 9. These sessions build essential life skills, fostering creativity, confidence and independence, while encouraging a love of cooking and healthy eating. Students can further develop their skills by taking Food and Nutrition as a GCSE, while Sixth Formers can take the Culinary Skills Diploma as part of Mayfield’s Enrichment programme. Year 13 students also explore practical meal ideas in Life Skills lessons, preparing them for university. With boarders from over 25 countries, Mayfield enjoys a rich mix of food influences, and international students celebrate their heritage through food, marking occasions such as Nigerian Independence Day and Chinese New Year with vibrant dishes. Boarders in Years 7 to 10 enjoy relaxed Saturday morning cooking sessions, while cookery clubs are some of the most popular extracurricular activities among Lower and Middle School students. Events like the inter-house ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ competition, charity fundraisers, and last year’s ‘Come Dine with Us’ collaboration with a local boys’ school add an extra dash of fun to the kitchen.

With its state-of-the-art cookery facility, Truro School is home to Cornwall’s only Leiths Academy. Alongside their A Levels, students can pursue the Level 3 Extended Certificate in Professional Cookery, which offers 12-36 UCAS points and provides a hands-on, five-term programme that develops professional culinary skills. Beginning with fundamental techniques in soups, sauces, pastries and bread, students then advance to complex dishes such as tandoori prawns, profiteroles, and duck breast with bramble sauce. In the second year, they refine their expertise, culminating in a team-hosted canapés and cocktail event, simulating a professional setting. Beyond cooking, students gain wine pairing knowledge from a Leiths-trained sommelier and experience working under professional kitchen conditions. The course integrates seamlessly into the Sixth Form timetable, finishing at Easter to allow time for A Level exam preparation. This qualification enhances UCAS applications and opens doors to careers in cheffing, food journalism, recipe development, and marketing. It also equips students with essential life skills, including time management, teamwork, and organisation, preparing them for university, employment, or further culinary training.

Cookery is very popular at Westonbirt School, with students learning in a newly refurbished teaching kitchen. In Years 7-9 they study Food, before GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is offered in Years 10-11. In Sixth Form, students can take the Leiths Certificate in Food and Wine as an option, learning to multitask and meet high professional standards in the finish, taste and presentation of food. Using a full set of chef’s kit and their own set of professional knives, they practise a wide variety of cookery skills, while written assignments, tests and coursework underpin their practical accomplishments. As well as the Leiths Certificate, students can earn up to 36 UCAS points with a Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality Level 3 Extended Certificate in Professional Cookery. Completion of the Leiths Certificate grants access to the ‘Leiths List’, an agency that posts job opportunities around the world – a great way to earn money during university holidays or a gap year. Those who wish to take it further can go to Leiths in London and study for two further terms to complete the full Leiths Diploma.

Focussed on bringing out the best in every pupil, Worksop College helps them excel in whatever they are passionate about. Accordingly, its Food and Nutrition programme is about more than learning to cook – it’s about opening doors to a range of opportunities. The programme equips pupils with practical culinary skills and an understanding of nutrition, food provenance, and the science behind cooking. Through a mix of theory and practical work, pupils explore the effects of food on the body, the origins of ingredients, and how food production supports industries. They can take a Sheffield food tour and visit local food producers and manufacturing sites to see how the food industry operates on a larger scale. The programme has inspired many to pursue careers in the food and hospitality industry, such as one alumnus who recently graduated from Glion Institute of Higher Education with a degree in International Hospitality Business Management with Honours. For those with a passion for food, the programme provides the opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge that can lead to exciting careers in Nutrition, Health, Hospitality, Catering, Food Production, or Food Retail.
