Winning ways for Aldenham School’s hockey teams
Hockey is the main sport during this spring term at many British boarding schools, with high levels of competition across the age ranges and in all parts of the country.
For example, Aldenham School has recently been celebrating the success of its girls’ hockey teams at U14 and U15 level, both having been crowned district champions after winning a competitive tournament against other schools from the local area.
The U14 team secured comfortable 2-0 wins against three schools before facing the Royal Masonic School in the final. With both teams undefeated in the tournament so far, the winner would be crowned champions. In a close contest, it was Aldenham who emerged 2-1 victors, with all the girls making valuable contributions throughout.
This success was then matched by the U15 team who, in wretched conditions, won the district cup for their age group. After winning their first two matches, a tightly fought semi-final ended in stalemate, meaning the match needed to be settled on penalties. The Aldenham girls scored all three of their penalties, while their goalkeeper saved twice to help secure a place in the final. The final against Rickmansworth was an end-to-end affair but in the last minute of the match, a loose ball on the half way line was picked up and ushered past three defenders before being smashed into the bottom corner of the goal to become the decisive score that won the title.
Meanwhile, the boys’ 1st XI recently enjoyed a fantastic tour to Cape Town, where they competed impressively against some of the best young players in South Africa. They followed this up back at home with two wins out of two, before giving one of the performances of the season thus far – the 1-0 victory versus Harrow. Another match played in appalling weather conditions was deservedly won by Aldenham thanks to that all-important winning goal two minutes from time.
We love to hear of successes like this – well done to all the players and coaches involved!
