Where was Gina’s latest British boarding school visit?

Last week, Gina took advantage of a quieter office and some lovely weather to get out and about, and her latest British boarding school visit refreshed her knowledge of Durham School.

Situated in 35 acres, just a 5-minute walk from the centre of Durham with its famous cathedral and castle together forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is one of the UK’s oldest boarding schools with over 600 years’ history. It has strong links to Durham University, giving pupils access to the Bill Bryson library and some top-class sports facilities.

Of a total of ca. 500 pupils, around 75 to 100 tend to board. There is one girls’ boarding house, two for boys, and several day houses stay open into the evening for day pupils, forming a house system that fosters a strong sense of loyalty.

Complementing the more traditional academic departments, Art & Design Technology is particularly good, including a 3D laser cutter. There is also a wide range of extracurricular activities on offer.

Music is very strong at Durham and the charming Music School is at the heart of the school. As well as being a Steinway School, it has a fully equipped technical suite and a performance studio. Regular productions are hosted in the school’s own Luce Theatre and chapel, as well as in Durham Cathedral.

The offer of over 30 competitive sports makes for a lively Saturday fixture list, including rowing, golf and biathlon. Facilities include a boathouse on the nearby river (the third oldest in the world!), an all-weather pitch, swimming pool, and strength & conditioning and cardiovascular gyms.

In short, Gina’s latest British boarding school visit reminded her that this is a small, friendly school with something for everyone. Could it be the one for your child? Contact Gina to find out.
