What’s behind Sedbergh School’s new motto?

Sedbergh School is about to start celebrating its quincentenary. As it approached this major milestone, it reviewed the school motto, Dura Virum Nutrix (a stern nurse of men), which was adopted way back in 1893 and no longer felt part of the identity of younger Sedberghians. The search was on for a new motto that would accurately reflect this British boarding school’s values when preparing to enter a new age. We found the history and this process of looking ahead fascinating, so decided to share it here.

While Dura Virum Nutrix remains part of Sedbergh’s heritage and will continue to be displayed on The Cloisters, a consultation process sought to ensure that any new motto would be supported by the wider Sedbergh community and have longevity. As with any major change, there were strong views on all sides, but one common phrase appeared repeatedly in the many letters and emails on the subject.

The lyrics to ‘The Long Run’, and particularly the phrase ‘never shall you strive in vain in the long run’, were cited often. Every Sedbergh student learns this song in their final years at school, and boys and girls sing it under their breath when pushing themselves to complete the challenging Wilson Run. Old Sedberghians then speak of recalling the phrase in tough times, and of it bringing them unexpected reserves of strength. Sung first in adolescence, these lyrics are woven through the very being of Sedberghians young and old, resonating deeply with the values instilled by the school community.

Therefore, ‘Never shall you strive in vain’ will be adopted as Sedbergh School’s new motto from January 2025.
