Gina’s visit to Warminster School

Gina’s itinerary of British boarding school visits next took her further south to Warminster School, located in the small town of Warminster near Bath and Bristol, and just under 2 hours from London by train. The Senior School has around 424 pupils, of whom about 35% are currently boarding and around 25% are international. There is a great sense of community and family, and a lovely traditional feel. Complementing the school’s academic function, there are around 70 extra-curricular clubs and societies to choose from, and on Wednesday afternoons pupils take part in the popular CCF or participate in thriving Community Action Service projects, which take place in and out of school helping the local community.

Academic

Sixth Form students can choose from 23 A Level subjects or do the IB Diploma, and also have the option to follow the IB Career-related programme. Relationships with staff are strong, with pupils meeting their tutors twice per day in small groups. The state-of-the-art Science Centre helps bring the STEM subjects to life.

Boarding

There are 5 very homely boarding houses. The new Sixth Form co-ed house with space for 60 students is proving so popular, there are plans for an additional co-ed house with space for a further 15 or so Sixth Formers from this September.

Sport

Sport is a key component of the all-round education Warminster delivers. All pupils are given the opportunity to represent the school, and whether this is in the 1st or 4th team their contribution is acknowledged and celebrated. For elite athletes there are bespoke development programmes, and facilities include an all-weather pitch and an outdoor swimming pool which is open in the summer. Tennis is particularly popular, as is Hockey.

Creative Arts

A strong Art department has a photography room, a green room and an excellent Design Centre with 3D printer and laser cutters. Music is another strength, and the Thomas Arnold Hall is an excellent concert space for the wide range of musical ensembles. Drama also plays a key role, with around 40 performances of different sizes taking place each year.
