Giggleswick School’s new fitness centre
All the British boarding schools we recommend have some enviable facilities and we often receive news of further developments. One such update came from Giggleswick School recently, when Olympic medallist triathlete Jonny Brownlee opened its new state of the art fitness centre.
Occupying a purpose-built extension to the school’s sports complex, the suite features the latest in weights, strength and conditioning training equipment, as well as top-end treadmills, cycle trainers, rowing machines and other cardio-vascular training aids.
The younger of the Brownlee brothers, Jonny competed at Giggleswick during his schooldays and recalled: “I won my first schools U9 cross country race here. I am really impressed by these new facilities with equipment very similar to that which we use. Giggleswick has a wonderful location for triathlon training and I would really enjoy training here.”
Headmaster Mark Turnbull thanked him, saying: “We were delighted to welcome Jonny to our school. Triathlon is a sport which we encourage at Giggleswick and Jonny’s visit was inspirational.”
The new gym ensures students at the school have access to the right equipment to help them train, whether for a specific sport or general fitness, enabling them to make the most of their active lives at school.
This development is part of an ongoing multi-million pound investment in the school, which also includes updating boarding houses to create modern, architecturally designed, home from home accommodation for its pupils.
The first phase of the boarding upgrade has already been completed, with subsequent refurbishment work scheduled to include a new upper sixth form house, designed to provide more independent living and working, preparing each student for life beyond school.
