Congratulations Gordonstoun!

We were delighted to see plenty of the Welsh, Scottish and English boarding schools we recommend recognised across the categories in this year’s Independent Schools of the Year Awards. Covering both day and boarding schools, the latter sector is key to us and our clients, so particular congratulations go to Gordonstoun for being named 2021’s Independent Boarding School.

We can certainly vouch for the school. Established in 1934 by the German Educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn, who was driven by his ambition to share his love of learning, the school is the source of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Round Square. The DofE Award recognises young people’s commitment to volunteering, a physical activity, a skill and an expedition, and millions of them in over 140 countries have developed through their participation in the scheme. Round Square is a worldwide association of 190 schools sharing the ethos of teaching social responsibility alongside academic excellence. It provides pupils and staff with opportunities to take part in global and regional conferences, go on international exchanges and volunteer for life-changing projects around the world.

While that provides an idea of the school’s basis, as the centenary of its founding approaches it is looking forwards, as demonstrated by the 2034 Campus Masterplan. Having a new ‘classroom village’ at the heart of the vision, there will be a new boarding house, major redevelopment of existing houses, exciting outdoor spaces and increased access to heritage buildings, to inspire and educate the next generation of Gordonstoun students. We can’t wait to see how the project progresses.

This vision and future-proofing is by no means limited to one school, of course. One of the key elements that sets our independent boarding schools apart is their ambition. Even award-winners won’t rest on their laurels, and we are never short of news of refurbished or brand-new boarding houses, state-of-the-art science blocks, art and design departments or sports facilities.
