Which are our best British boarding schools for business studies?

Education is enrichment and preparation for life, but there’s no escaping the fact it’s also about readying young people for the world of work. Not everyone has a clear vocation sending them on their journey to medicine, law, professional sport or becoming an astronaut, so the sooner those of us on a more meandering path become familiar with the world of business the better. Many schools offer Economics and/or Business Studies as subjects, but some have gone further and opened Business Schools on site. 

For example, Wrekin College’s Business School mixes enterprise and education in a modern, corporate-style building to offer a stepping stone from the world of education to the world of work. It’s where pupils learn about money; how it is made and how it works, so they can budget and be competent both at work and domestically. The College offers Business Studies as a GCSE, A Level and BTEC, as well as GCSE and A Level Economics, and Accounting A Level.

Meanwhile, New Hall School’s Sixth Form Business & Languages Centre is based on state-of-the-art university learning centres. Designed with Sixth Form students’ independent study and collaborative group work in mind, the air-conditioned rooms offer a calm environment and view of the school’s forest walk – perfect spaces in which to study for A Levels in Business and/or Economics.

British IB boarding school Ardingly College also has an Economics and Business Studies Centre, as well as its award-winning ‘Enterprise & Employability’ programme embedded throughout its curriculum. This includes life skills (e.g. presentation skills, financial planning/budgeting, business etiquette), entrepreneurial skills, with every year group participating in an enterprise competition or initiative, and using the alumni network for ‘real world’ mentoring and work experience placements.
