What about music at British boarding schools?

Music is an area where British boarding schools really do excel, offering first class teaching, excellent facilities, and myriad opportunities to develop performance skills in some inspiring venues.

We have featured music at British boarding schools in a previous blog, and this time we are focussing on Brentwood School, a co-educational day and boarding school located just north of London with a history reaching back to 1557. The school offers both A Levels and the IB Diploma, excellent facilities, and a brand new state-of-the-art boarding house opened in September 2025. Music plays a big part in school life, both academically and in terms of co-curricular opportunities, with 70+ annual performances, national and international summer music tours, and multiple performance venues, including the 400 seat Westwood Auditorium. The school became All-Steinway in 2019, and since 2020 a partnership with London’s Guildhall School of Music has facilitated the sharing of resources, along with access to masterclasses and exciting performance opportunities.

Brentwood’s Specialist Music Programme, launched in September 2024, is designed for pupils of exceptional musical ability who wish to pursue high-level training alongside a demanding and broad academic education. Under the leadership of renowned Moldovan violinist Grig Cuciuc, the programme combines rigorous musical discipline with tailored, individual care for a group of talented instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers. They receive one-to-one tuition from experienced specialist teachers, many of whom are professional performers themselves, enhanced by clear practice expectations, regular assessments, and personalised guidance to ensure consistent artistic progress.

Performance is central to the programme – pupils benefit from a wide range of performance opportunities, including solo recitals, chamber concerts, orchestral and choral performances, school productions, external concerts, tours, and competitions. These frequent opportunities build confidence, stagecraft, and resilience, while encouraging pupils to perform across a variety of styles and settings.

The Specialist Music Programme operates within Brentwood’s broader academic offering, which is known for its strength, balance, and flexibility. Musical study is fully integrated into school life, allowing pupils to thrive without sacrificing academic excellence. Timetabling is adapted where necessary to accommodate rehearsals, practice, and external commitments, such as national ensembles or conservatoire auditions. This ensures participation in the programme places no restrictions on subject choices at GCSE, A Level or IB Diploma, apart from, of course, choosing Music!

If you would like advice to find the best British boarding school to match your child’s musical potential, we would be delighted to hear from you.
