How about a digital detox at a British boarding school?

As we increasingly feel the pressure of being constantly connected, there is understandable concern about the effects on children. A recent Ofcom survey found that 97% of children aged 12 to 15 own a smartphone, and 66% feel pressure to respond to messages instantly. Aiming to improve mental health and online safety, more schools are exploring how to create healthier digital boundaries.

A positive example of results at the end of the first year of a daily digital detox at a British boarding school has been provided by Fyling Hall School. Headmaster, Steven Allen, describes it as “one of the most impactful decisions we’ve made.” Keen to stress there is no suggestion of punishment or restriction, he explains the idea was to give students the freedom to be young, present, unbothered by constant pings, scrolls, and social comparisons.

After some nervousness at the start, feedback has been positive, with many pupils saying they didn’t realise how much they needed the break until they had it. The increase in laughter, games, conversations and fun at breaktimes has strengthened the sense of community throughout the school, as well as having a positive impact on student wellbeing and focus.

This is just one example of how the schools we recommend care for their young charges. If you think your child would benefit from a British boarding school education, please contact us.
