Is guardianship a requirement at British boarding schools?

Yes, it is a legal requirement for any international student at school in the UK to have a guardian for two reasons. Our thanks to Pippa’s Guardians for providing this little summary.

First, for visa and immigration purposes, some countries like the UK require proof of a local guardian as part of the application process. This is to ensure that the student has adequate supervision and support while living and studying abroad.

It is also a requirement of the boarding school. International students need to have a guardian so that the school has a responsible adult to give parental consent in certain situations such as medical emergencies or disciplinary issues.

Who can act as a guardian?

If a parent sees a guardian just in legal and compliance terms, then a friend or family member could act as one for their child. They can sign the required contracts and be the contact for the school. But would they be available at the drop of a hat if there were a medical emergency? Would they go to parent conferences and sports matches? It’s a lovely thought that someone close could be on hand to act as that support but it might not be that easy in practice.

For parents needing more security from their child’s educational guardian, such as planned accommodation in the UK during school breaks and holidays, camps to teach and inspire, support with travel and school matters and 24/7 emergency support and assistance, a guardianship company would be the better option.
