Gina’s visit to Bromsgrove School

Gina has been on the road visiting British boarding schools in England’s West Midlands and the southwest. First on her list was Bromsgrove School.

Founded in 1553 and situated within a 100-acre campus in the town of Bromsgrove, the school is just 15 miles from Birmingham yet within easy reach of the stunning Malvern Hills and beautiful countryside. £50m has been invested in its facilities over the last 10 years, creating a wonderful mix of the traditional and the modern. With nearly 1,000 pupils in the Senior School, this is one of the larger schools we recommend. The student population consists of around 50% boarders and around 30% of the school is international. Despite the substantial size of the school, it still manages to exude a warm, friendly, family-feel.

Academic

Bromsgrove School offers A Levels and the IB in the Sixth Form, returning consistently strong results in both. 23 subjects are taught at A Level and the average IB points score over the last few years has been an impressive 38.

Boarding

The six boarding houses are refurbished frequently on a rolling programme and the vast majority of rooms are now ensuite. Housman Hall, the co-ed Sixth Form House was refurbished ten years ago and offers a lovely stepping stone to life after school.

Sport

As with so many of our British boarding schools, there is a particularly strong focus on sport here. There are 2 sports halls with climbing walls, 2 floodlit astroturfs, 6 floodlit netball/tennis courts, a fitness studio, a 25m swimming pool and an impressive 8 court performance area with 500 seats. There is an athletics facility nearby, as well as an Outdoor Education Centre for sailing and kayaking.

Creative Arts

An impressive new Music School opened in 2017 with a 300-seat concert hall, a new 300-seat theatre, a performance studio, workshops, props store and dressing rooms. There is also a beautiful modern, light and airy Art and Design Technology (DT) block, with the DT department proving particularly popular with students.
